Just been perusing some of the blogs on blogspot and man, there are some whacky people out there. But in all fairness they'd probably feel the same way about me.

Just one example (not to say these are the only freaks on the internet) from a nice enough looking family:

They are obviously a little washed in the brain department...

This isn't even that nutty, but I don't want to post some of the worse stuff I came across. Trust me.

Health and Wellness: Cholesterol

Hello cyberspace and welcome to the Health and Wellness segment of this blog.

Today we're going to talk about cholesterol. The silent killer. A few months ago, I found out my cholesterol was high, 240-ish high. I was shocked! 

Anyways, in more recent news, my cholesterol went from waaaay too high back down to better than normal in just a few months!

If I, a twenty something college student (read:beer, junk food and the freshman 15), can get my cholesterol to a very healthy number in a matter of months, then you and everyone else should be able to!

What I did:
These may seem kind of obvious, but they work and I'm living proof.

I ate a LOT of vegetables. Now, when I say vegetables, I don't mean a hint of broccoli under a swimming pool of melted cheese. I ate real vegetables (which are naturally cholesterol free) and yes, they were good!  One thing you could do is pick up a vegan cook book for yummy and cholesterol free ideas.

I completely cut out all TRANS FATS.  "Partially hydrogenated" and "hydrogenated" are words that you should not allow in your body. Period.

Also, I severely limited my intake of SATURATED FATS. I mean, no more than 5mg a day. It may seem hard to do at first, but there are many healthy alternatives in the world of snacking.

Tip: Another thing I did if I really just had to have something with sat fats in it, was to eat at least double the amount of UNSATURATED FATS. It may sound kind of neurotic but it's really just logic. You should also try to increase your overall intake of unsaturated fats. All unsaturated fats are good!

I cut out ALL DAIRY, EGGS AND MEAT. The only meat I continued to eat was fish. I usually only eat it in sushi form and only a couple times a week.

I also did not eat any fast food whatsoever, always made sure to order salad with olive oil and lots of pepper along with a red sauced pasta when eating out and steered clear of the candy section at the grocery store.


I know you can do it if you really just tell yourself you're going to commit. Small steps towards eating better are small steps in a direction for a happier and healthier you.
